What’s happening now?
By early November, a lot of yards have two things at once. A pile of leaves and a bare patch of garden soil. It’s easy to haul one away and pay for a bag to cover the other.
Dry leaves can cover soil, especially if you break them up first. Whole leaves can mat together. A small batch is enough to see how it works in your yard.
Has this happened before?
In 1983, Montgomery County, Maryland, started composting the leaves it vacuumed from curbs. It started with one material that arrived in big piles every fall.
What happened next?
In 1989 the county added other yard trimmings, including grass. At home you can start with one material, too. Use a bucket of leaves before deciding what to do with the whole pile.
The name comes back after they leave.
You knew it. You used it yesterday. But when you needed the name, it would not come. What is the tiny “memory bean” at the start of this video? See how it connects to Neuro-Thrive.
What can I do?
Pick one small, bare patch around established plants. Crush a bucket of dry leaves by hand with gloves or shred them with equipment you know how to use. Spread a light layer over the soil and leave space around stems and trunks. Look again after rain. If the leaves form a wet mat, loosen or thin the layer.
