Find the water shutoff. close-up of a brass shutoff on a home water pipe, dark basement wall, faint rolled plumbing map.

You hear water running. The sink is off. The sound is coming from somewhere below the floor. Now is a bad time to learn which valve shuts off the house.

Today’s check takes about 10 minutes.

What’s happening now?

Indiana’s Winter Weather Preparedness Week starts November 8. Cold can freeze water in exposed pipes, and damage may become clear when the water starts to flow again. Find the house shutoff while the route is dry and well lit. A clear path and a label can save time if you ever need the valve.

Has this happened before?

The fire crews who brought hoses that did not fit

1904 Baltimore firefighters beside a street hydrant, horse-drawn fire apparatus blurred behind, no flames close to people
An illustrated reconstruction of the U.S. example.

In February 1904, fire tore through a large part of Baltimore. Crews from other cities came to help. They brought men, equipment, and hoses. At some hydrants, they ran into a problem that had nothing to do with how much effort they were willing to put in.

The threads on some hose fittings did not match the threads on the local hydrants. A crew could have a hose in hand and a source of water in front of it, yet still have trouble joining the two. The National Institute of Standards and Technology describes this mismatch as a lesson that came out of the fire.

Work after the fire included a survey of coupling threads. In 1905, the National Fire Protection Association adopted its first standard for those connections. A standard is an agreed way to make a part. The idea was that crews could use the same fitting when they showed up to help. A new standard did not change all old equipment at once.

Think about the delay at the hydrant. The people there needed water at that moment. The time to find out whether one part fit another had already passed. A small check made ahead of time would have told them much more than a long list of gear.

At home, a shutoff valve is a very different problem. The shared point is access. You can have a useful control in the building and still lose time if you cannot find it, reach it, or tell whether it is the one you need.

What happened next?

Knowing where water comes from is only half the job. you also need to know the point where you can act.

Before you buy another tool, look at what’s already in the shed. The handbook collects older ways to put ordinary gear back to work.

What can I do?

Find and label the indoor or owner-accessible shutoff. If you rent or aren’t sure which valve is yours, ask the building manager. Never force a stuck valve or operate a utility valve.

Set up the check with the supplies you already have.

1. Walk to the place where water enters the house, or ask who knows where the main shutoff is.

2. Clear a path to it. Mark its location with a tag or take a photo from far enough back to show the route.

3. Show one other person the photo and ask them to point to the valve. Write down who to call if the valve cannot be used.
