BLS reported that producer prices for final demand were unchanged in July.
But inside the report, lumber prices in intermediate demand rose 5.0% in one month. Final-demand construction prices rose 2.2%.
That is exactly why DIY households should not plan from the average.
The board, fitting, fastener, or sheet good you need may move differently from the headline.

U.S. PARALLEL: THE WORLD WAR II SALVAGE MINDSET

1942 made substitution a household skill: when the preferred material disappeared, the function still had to get done.
During World War II, American households were asked to rethink what counted as waste.
Rubber, scrap metal, cooking fats, paper, and other materials were collected for the war effort.
Factories were redirected toward military production. Civilian access to many goods tightened.
The response was not only “buy less.”
People repaired, reused, saved parts, and found substitutes.
That change in mindset matters.
