The 1965 blackout exposed how many ordinary household jobs had quietly become electrical.
PARALLEL 1 — 1965: 30 MILLION PEOPLE LOST THE SWITCH
On November 9, 1965, a disturbance in the electric grid cascaded across the Northeast.
Within minutes, large parts of New York, New England and Canada went dark. Roughly 30 million people were affected across about 80,000 square miles.
Elevators stopped. Traffic signals went black. Subways stalled. Office towers emptied by stairwell.
But inside houses, the more interesting lesson was smaller.
The blackout exposed which everyday functions had quietly become electrical.
