The current signal

NOAA’s September 10 update gives a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong El Niño in fall and winter. The local effects will vary.

A seasonal headline cannot tell you how wet one garden bed will be. But it is a good cue to look at exposed soil before the next weather swing.

University of Minnesota Extension explains that mulch can slow evaporation, soften temperature swings and protect soil from the force of rain.

Over the coming weeks, a well-covered patch may need less attention than bare soil beside it. Start small enough to see the difference and adjust your watering from what the soil actually needs.

1935: The soil had to stay on the farm

In the 1930s, the Great Plains faced severe drought and dust storms. Soil that had taken a long time to form could leave a field on the wind.

The damage exposed a hard truth. A farm could own land on paper while losing the working layer that made the land useful.

Soil scientist Hugh Hammond Bennett had spent years warning about erosion. Between 1933 and 1935, he and his colleagues set up demonstration projects through the Soil Erosion Service.

The aim was to show changes on actual land. Fields could be laid out along contours. Planting methods could change. Cover could help protect soil rather than leave it exposed between crops.

The young program faced arguments over funding, authority and which agency should run it. Meanwhile, the dust kept making the issue visible far beyond the farms.

On April 27, 1935, a permanent Soil Conservation Service was created in the Department of Agriculture. A temporary response was becoming an ongoing job.

The useful shift was in what counted as production. Growing this year’s crop mattered. Keeping the land able to grow next year’s crop mattered too.

That is a good lens for a small household garden. The work is not finished when the seed goes in or the watering can is empty. The soil is a working part of the system.

Your patio bed is not the Dust Bowl. The scale, weather and history are different. The shared lesson is to protect the useful layer before you have to replace what leaves it.

A cover of suitable mulch can make the surface less exposed to drying and hard rain. It will not fix every soil problem, but it gives that patch a little protection.

Bennett’s demonstration plots also suggest a sensible way to begin. Make one small change you can inspect. Learn from the patch in front of you before turning the whole yard into a weekend project.

Around 1100: A thin volcanic layer changed the ground

A thin cinder layer helped some ancient fields retain moisture. Editorial reconstruction.

Around the late eleventh century, Sunset Crater erupted near what is now Flagstaff, Arizona. Ash and cinders fell across land where ancestral Puebloan communities lived and farmed.

Near the volcano, the deposits were too thick for farming. People had to leave fields and adapt to a landscape that had changed around them.

Farther away, the National Park Service describes a different effect. Where the layer was thin, the ash helped hold soil moisture. It acted as mulch.

That does not make the eruption a gift. The harm close to the volcano was real. The interesting detail is that the same material could have a different effect depending on its depth and place.

The Arizona Geological Survey describes people using the fresh ash fall in dry farming. The surface layer changed how long scarce water stayed available below it.

Think about the daily problem this helped address. Rain could arrive, wet the ground and then disappear into dry air. A farmer needed some of that brief supply to remain near the roots.

The cover did not summon another rain cloud. It changed the loss after the rain had passed.

That is why this story is useful for a modern garden. We often focus on what to add: more water, more feed, another product. Sometimes the first job is to help what is already there stay useful longer.

We should not copy volcanic farming by dumping cinders into a vegetable bed. The lesson is the role of the surface, not a shopping list for ancient materials.

Use a mulch suited to your plants and your climate. Keep it clear of stems. Watch the soil underneath rather than watering by habit.

The old fields also warn against the idea that more must always be better. A thin layer and a deep burial do very different things. Your small install should have a measured depth, a clear purpose and a chance to prove itself in the garden you actually have.
