Why You Need a Pond on Your Homestead

Building a pond is immensely useful and beneficial for the homestead or garden. While there are a few points to consider, such as cost and labor, there is so much that a healthy pond brings to the table.

    A Habitat for Wildlife

Providing your local pond-dwelling creatures with clean water for a home environment and breeding site is a great way to positively impact your region’s ecosystem. The following pond components are especially beneficial to animals:

    • A shallow portion for bathing/wading birds and migrating amphibians.
    • Native plants, which provide shade, food and cover for diverse pond life.
    • Large rocks, branches, or other materials along the pond’s edge for cover for small animals.

    Potential for Aquatic Permaculture

Even a small pond can be incredibly useful when practicing aquaculture. Many edible plants can be grown in backyard ponds. Check your local gardening resource to see which varieties are best suited for your region. Some edible aquatic plants include:

    • Wapato – food for people and livestock, beneficial insect attractor
    • Wild Rice – food for people and livestock
    • Cattail – food, materials for crafts, water filtration, cover for small/young fish
    • Lotus- food for people, cover for fish, beneficial insect attractor
    • Pond Lily – food for people and livestock, cover for fish, beneficial insect attractor

    Water Storage Preparedness

Among the many utilitarian benefits, a pond can act as your own personal reservoir in case of an emergency. With a good, powerful water filter, you can have complete peace of mind that you’ll never lack safe, clean drinking water.

    Education and Recreation

Nothing adds to the visual appeal of a yard or garden like the idyllic view of a pond. If planned thoughtfully, the construction of a small pond can even be a solution for soggy spots or rain runoff in the backyard. With a couple of comfortable lawn chairs or a picnic table, it becomes a favorite gathering place. If you have children, a pond becomes an outdoor classroom with limitless hands-on learning opportunities about biology and ecology. The magic of watching water insects or tadpoles grow and transform beats a science textbook any day!

    Mason Jar Aquaponics (Infographic)

I shared an infographic recently on the benefits of aquaponics, and I came across this the other day that I thought was really neat, and super easy to create.

It is a very simple DIY mason jar aquaponics set-up. Obviously, you’re not going to be growing tons of your own food this way, but I thought it would make a great experiment for homeschool or even for curious grownups. It could even serve simply as a very cool upgrade to an indoor decorative plant or herb garden!

The original post on Desima.co has a photograph of one in real life, it’s pretty neat!

  • Guppies for the Garden

    Guppies for the Garden

When one thinks of raising animals that offer benefits for your garden, chickens are probably the first to come to mind.  But not everyone has the ability or the desire to have animals that require as much care as chickens do, or make as much noise as chickens do.  Luckily, there are animals that offer several benefits for the garden that require barely any attention and make absolutely no noise:  guppies! Yes, the little fish.  Guppies are freshwater fish that don’t require pumps of filters in their aquariums or ponds.  Females can reproduce at 2 months

Guppies are freshwater fish that don’t require pumps of filters in their aquariums or ponds.  Females can reproduce at 2 months old, and can give birth (yes they give live birth which is cool to see if you have them in an aquarium) to 60 fry (baby guppies) at a time.  They can be put outside in most zones in the spring and netted back up in the fall to be brought inside for the winter, and if you have enough plants in their pond, they don’t require much care in between.  But why should you raise guppies?

    Pest Control

The most commonly sought advantage to raising guppies is their ravenous appetite for mosquito larva.  Having a pond or outdoor aquarium will provide mosquitoes with a place they will feel save leaving their eggs.  Having that pond stocked with guppies will ensure that none of those eggs ever amount to an adult mosquito that will buzzing in your ear while you are outside working or relaxing in your garden.

    Fertilizer

Like every other animal, guppies produce waste that can be used in your garden as fertilizer.  It smells less than chicken manure and it’s easier to collect than horse manure.  Just move the water plants to one side, and stir the water until it goes from clear to green.  Then dip in your watering can and fill it up, water hungry fruiting plants like tomatoes or melons with the contents.

    Feed

If you do have chickens in your back yard, guppies can still be a nice addition.  As little as 10 adult guppies placed outside in the spring can result in 1,000 adults by fall.  It’s unlikely that you want to net in and maintain 1,000 guppies inside through the winter.  Instead, you can regularly scoop some up and toss them to your chickens.  Chickens love guppies.  But if you don’t have chickens, you can (it might sound cruel) bury the guppies in your fall garden for rich soil in the spring (watch out for raccoons).

Guppies require less care than just about anything.  They can be raised in virtually anything that holds water.  They can reduce mosquitoes, give free fertilizer, and provide pretty cool entertainment if you watch them give birth.  Give guppies a try for your garden this spring.
