Different herbs, plants, and roots can help to increase your health and make all that healthy food taste even better. Let’s look at some of the best options when it comes to spicing up your food.

    Cinnamon

Most people like cinnamon quite a bit. However, they probably are not eating it in the healthiest manner possible. After all, a cinnamon roll isn’t exactly good for you. However, there are some ways we can eat and remain healthy and enjoy the benefits that cinnamon offers. For example, sprinkle some of it on oatmeal or into peanut butter. You can put some on sweet potatoes as well. In fact, it works well for quite a few different types of food.

Why is cinnamon such a good option? It has the potential to help manage your blood sugar levels and lower your cholesterol while keeping your arteries healthy.

    Chili Peppers

If you want a little bit of a spicy life, chili peppers are the way to go. These peppers include an ingredient called capsaicin. This is what provides the plants their heat, and it’s also what provides the health benefits. Some of the benefits you can get from capsaicin include pain relief, improve the health of your heart, and it can reduce inflammation.

    Turmeric

Another fantastic spice to consider using is turmeric. You will often find this used in different types of curry, you can add it to other things as well. Many have found that it can reduce inflammation, and this has been a benefit for people who suffer from arthritis.

    Oregano

Oregano is a popular and flavorful herb. However, many don’t know that it also happens to include two antibacterial agents. This can help to fight off infection. In addition, those who have been looking to add more antioxidants to their life will enjoy knowing that oregano has about four times the number of antioxidants as blueberries. It happens to be very easy to grow at home, as well. You should definitely add this to your garden if you haven’t already.

    Garlic

Garlic is a good option as well, and it has a number of health benefits. For centuries, it has been a part of natural medicine, and with good reason. It has antiviral properties, as well as antibacterial and antifungal properties. There have also been studies that show you can stop blood clots from forming in the arteries. • How to Kill Microbes

How often do you think about microbes and other types of infectious pathogens? If you are learning to survive and trying to be more self-sufficient, then you might think about this more than the average person. Still, you may not understand how to deal with these types of infectious pathogens and microbes properly. In many cases, utilizing things such as antibiotics and antimicrobials will work to deal with microbes.

In fact, you can find quite a few items in the store, including a variety of name brand cleaners, that have antimicrobial properties. Of course, if you only rely on these commercial products, you won’t know how to be self-sufficient if that time ever comes when you need to be. Fortunately, there are a number of very simple methods to help kill microbes, which will help to prevent disease and improve health of you and your family. Let’s look at a few of the different methods you can use.

    Fresh Air

Experiments have shown that it is possible to kill bacteria simply by exposing it to fresh air. By exposing pathogenic bacteria to fresh air for about two hours, it has the potential to kill most of the bacteria. These are relatively old methods, but they are tried-and-true and still work today.

Of course, they are not the only methods used to deal with microbes. Let’s look at some of the other simple and effective ways that you can reduce the number of potentially dangerous microbes in your home right now.

    Cleaning the Sponges and Towels

Chances are you have quite a few sponges and towels around the kitchen, and these can be a haven for bacteria. Namely, because they can stay wet and they are porous, which means there are plenty of places that bacteria can hide and grow. With your sponges, you could put them in a pool of water and put in the microwave for two minutes. You could also boil water and then pour it over the sponges while they are sitting in the same. You can wash the towels in hot water, or you can boil them as you can the sponges.

Keep Everything as Clean as Possible

You should strive to keep all areas of the home as clean as possible. This is true in a day-to-day situation in home or while you are camping, as well as any survival situation. By keeping things clean, you significantly reduce the chance of infection.

    People

Microbes tend to gather on people and spread from person-to-person quite easily. The human hand is quite dirty, so washing hands with soap and water and then drying them with a clean towel can help reduce the number of microbes being spread to the home significantly. If you handle any poultry, meat, or eggs, then you should wash your hands immediately after.

Everybody wants to be happy and healthy. You will find that a little cleanliness will go a long way in making sure you and your family are protected from microbes.

  • The Health Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps

The Health Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps

Himalayan salt lamps have been increasing in popularity lately, and for good reason. The pretty pink chucks of salt fitted with lamps on the inside make lovely additions to any decor, but they also provide amazing health benefits. They are called the “vitamins of the air”.

The way they work is by emitting negative ions, which cancel out harmful positive ions. Positive ions are created by electronic devices and radiation from electronic fields such as WiFi or cellphone networks. Positive ions can exacerbate issues such as allergies, insomnia and stress.

Himalayan sea salt is the purest sea salt on earth. It contains all the elements that naturally occur in our bodies. The way the ion process works is that the salt, like all salt, naturally attracts water. When the heat from the light bulb causes the salt to warm up, the water begins to evaporate, being diffused into the air. The negative ions get released this way, and they bond with the positive ions. You know those cheesy animations in Febreeze commercials that show the happy little Fabreeze bubbles capturing and eliminating ugly odors? That’s how the negative ions bust up the nasty, harmful positive ions that mess with our sleep patterns and other bodily systems.

The health benefits are many, including:

    • Increasing blood flow and circulation
    • Boosting serotonin levels
    • Reducing symptoms of asthma
    • Improved lung capacity
    • Improved mood
    • Reduced stress
    • Reduced symptoms of allergies
    • Better sleep
    • Increased energy levels
    • Reduced headaches

Not all salt lamps are created equal though, so when you’re shopping for one, make sure it is pure, food-grade Himalayan salt. There are cheaper imitations on the market right now, and you simply won’t get the health benefits from anything less than the good stuff.

Himalayan salt is also great on food and a much healthier alternative to standard table salt. Full of minerals and nutrients, it’s also totally delicious! They even make Himalayan salt licks for horses and dogs.

Do you have a Himalayan salt lamp or use Himalayan salt on your homestead?

  • 4 Healthy DIY Alternatives to Soda

4 Healthy DIY Alternatives to Soda

Soda is delicious, refreshing and, unfortunately, really, really bad for you. A single can of soda contains roughly ten tablespoons of sugar, not to mention extra high fructose corn syrup, or, if you’re opting for diet soda, harmful aspartame, which has been linked to cancer in rats and is even commonly recommended that pregnant women avoid for its increased risk of birth defects or miscarriage. Soda also contains phosphoric acid, sodium, and is normally made with the lowest-quality tap water available. All these nasty ingredients greatly increase your risk of diabetes, cancer, chronic dehydration and high blood pressure, as well as tooth decay, osteoporosis and bone softening.

Unfortunately, soda, especially diet soda, can be terribly addictive. The good news is that there’s a few great alternatives to help you kick the habit-all with wonderful health benefits, that are affordable and easy to make at home! Here they are:

    1. Ice tea: probably the simplest on this list, ice tea is a breeze to make at home and can satisfy your desire for a cool, refreshing and tasty beverage. All you need to do is brew your tea of choice like you would normally, but with about 1/3 the hot water you would normally use. If you want to make a pitcher, throw three or four tea bags in there and brew. Then fill with cold water and ice and you’re done! Choosing a simple green or herbal tea, without added ingredients like soy lecithin or natural flavor, is the best option for a delicious and healthy alternative to soda
    2. Infused water: it’s very simple to make delicious and super healthy infused water at home. You can buy a infused-waterspecial bottle or pitcher just for infusing, but you don’t have to. Infused water is essentially soaking fruits or herbs in water for a boosted nutritional content and delicious flavor. Popular options are lemon, lime, cucumber, mint, and berries. Even just a few slices of lemon in a pitcher of cold water is guaranteed to have you forgetting about soda in no time.
    3. Sparkling water: sparkling water, which is very popular in Europe and Latin America, is a great alternative to soda and, if it’s the carbonation you really like, will satisfy the craving very well. Just make sure to opt for brands that don’t have added artificial flavors or sweeteners-a great option is to buy plane sparking water and infuse as mentioned above
    4. Kombucha and water kefir: these require a bit more to get started than the other options on this list, but they’re by far the most nutritious. Naturally fermented probiotics, you can brew kombucha or water kefir right on your counter top by purchasing either a kombucha “scoby” or water kefir “grains”, which you feed a diet of black tea and/or sugar. In the cases of both these beverages, as they kombucha-1074594_960_720are brewed the kombucha or kefir organisms consume the caffeine and sugar and convert them to a healthy, fizzy, delicious probiotic drink. This is also a great option if you’d like to scale back on beer or wine as well, as they have a similar strong flavor as beer and wine but without the high alcohol content.
