  • How to Make a Holiday Wreath (Video)

How to Make a Holiday Wreath (Video)

A holiday wreath is a really easy way to dress up your house for the holidays without spending hours hanging lights that you’ll just take down in a few weeks anyway. And for homesteaders, why not make some wreaths out of found seasonal foliage on your property?

Even if you don’t homestead, this easy, homemade wreath is a great alternative to artificial or expensive seasonal wreaths at Walmart.

I think my favorite thing about this homemade wreath is that you can customize it to use whatever foliage and decorations you have, you could integrate Christmas tree ornaments, tinsel, even lights if you wanted to get really creative! Holiday decorations with a personal, homemade touch are so much simpler and classic and in my opinion, more festive! Have you ever made your own holiday decorations or wreaths? Share below!

  • Make Your Own Powdered Laundry Detergent

Make Your Own Powdered Laundry Detergent

Are you tired of buying overpriced laundry detergent that has too much scent? As a homesteader, you should be making your own laundry detergent. You will find that with a few simple ingredients, you can create laundry detergent that works just as well as what you buy, and it will save you quite a bit of money in the end.

Choose a bar soap that you like, and look for the powdered form. You should be able to find it in the grocery store or online. Then, take four cups of the shaved or powdered soap and combine it with two cups of borax and two cups of washing soda. Mix it and store it in an airtight container. You could also add two cups of baking soda to the mix if you would like. You will only need to use two tablespoons for a load of laundry.

You might be wondering what to do about scent. Even though the detergent in the store might be over-scented, that doesn’t mean you don’t want any scent at all. A simple tip you can use is to add a couple of drops of essential oil into the laundry while you add the detergent. You can increase or decrease the amount you add based on how your first load turns out. This way, you will get just the amount of scent that you want.

The simple recipe found here is for powdered laundry detergent. While it is possible to make liquid detergent as well, these seem to work better because they require less storage space for more detergent.

As you can see, it’s easier than you probably thought to create your own laundry detergent. With a small expenditure at the outset, you could make a large amount of detergent that could last the entire year.

  • Making Candles in a Pringles Tube! (Video)

This is entire too cool not to share!

I’ve always loved those big, tall, chunky pillar candles, but I’ve always figured they needed fancy candle making molds that I couldn’t afford, and I really prefer to do everything as simple as possible.

However, I have seen floating around social media a simple trick: using a Pringles can! It works as a perfect mold for tall pillar candles, and is so simple and easy you could make a bunch for easy and meaningful holiday gifts, or to stock up on survival candles for the homestead. Check it out!

  • Clove and Orange Christmas Decorations

    Clove and Orange Christmas Decorations

As a kid I used to make clove and orange Christmas decorations but I hadn’t thought about them in years. I saw this video the other day and it reminded me of how sweet-smelling these decorations can be, and what a fun and simple craft for kids they are.

In the winter time, indoor air can become stale really easily, especially since colder temperatures make it uninviting to open windows, but these cute and festive decorations also double as natural air fresheners.

Chemical candles or Glade plug-in style air fresheners can pollute your home with toxic fumes and overwhelming, artificial scents, so this is a great alternative for fresh, sweet, holiday scents.

  • Building a Natural First Aid Kit

Building a Natural First Aid Kit

On the homestead, one is subject to bumps, bruises, rashes, and other maladies and injuries. It’s very important to have a well-stocked first aid kit. But what about the homesteader who wants more natural, holistic options for home remedies, rather than simply OTC medicine that might be expensive and hard to stock up on for people who live in the country?

Here is a simple list on how to get started restocking your first aid kit. There are so many wonderful DIY natural remedies available these days (thank you, Pinterest!) it can be almost overwhelming to know which natural remedies to stock up on. So this list will help you figure out what will work best for your needs.

    1. Take inventory

If you already have a first aid kit or first aid items scattered around the house, gather them all together and see what you have. What have you used recently? Which items do you find particularly helpful? What items have you had since the first Bush presidency? What items are useful, but might have harmful parabens or petroleum products in them? Also, think about the herbs and plants you have on your property and in your garden that might have healing properties of their own.

    2. Reduce, reuse, and find replacements

Throw away old, expired, and unused items. Keep what you like and see if anything needs replenishing. Items like band-aids, gauze, and medical tape are great to keep a healthy stock of, especially if you live far away from stores at which they can be purchased. If you have items you like but maybe would like to find natural alternatives, set them aside for emergencies and make a list of the injuries or issues they address and research healthy and safe alternatives. If you are a Pinterest user, make a board just for natural remedy ideas.

    3. Plan ahead

Think about the first aid emergencies you’re most concerned about on the homestead. Issues like splinters, rashes, sunburns, cuts, scrapes, and common colds and flus are probably going to be at the top of your list. Then add to your list or Pinterest board possible natural remedies that will help with these. The simpler the better, and anything that works double-duty is great. For instance, coconut oil and aloe are great for anything skin-related, raw honey is a multi-purpose antibiotic and cold remedy, activated charcoal can help with stomach issues, skin issues and to pull out splinters, etc.

    4. Create

Get started making some of the remedies for issues you’re already dealing with. You’d be surprised how long a jar of homemade herbal salve can last, for example. You don’t have to make everything all at once, just try to plan for some all-natural remedy ingredients that you can stock up on to make what you need when you need it.

  • DIY Starter Containers

    DIY Starter Containers

Whether or not you grow in containers, it’s nice to start some crops on tables, or even indoors.  But for every plant that you end up transplanting into the ground, you could have started 10 or more that never made the cut.  That means that if you are going to start crops in containers, you are going to need a lot of starter pots, and can add up quickly.  Here are some ways that you can make starter pots from material that you already have and might even be throwing away.

    Egg Cartons

An egg carton can provide a dozen little starter pots.  The carton should be left intact when starting, with only a small hole poked in the bottom of each depression.  Potting soil can be added until it is level with the outside of the carton.  When you want to transplant, you can cut each section free with scissors and plant the seedling in the ground while still in the carton, the carton will decompose without inhibiting growth.

    Toilet Paper Rolls

While it may take longer to acquire a dozen toilet paper rolls than it does to go through a dozen eggs, you can still save them and use them to start in.  Toilet paper rolls are great for starting cuttings rather than seeds, for crops like comfrey or cholesterol spinach.  They too can be planted in the ground without removing the plant from the container.

    Soda Cans

Pop cans for those that don’t say soda, but same thing.  The cans can be cut in two, holes can be made in the sides of what was previously the bottom of the can for drainage since the bottom is pretty thick.  The top doesn’t need this since it has an opening.  Be careful when using these since the sides can be sharp.

Before going out and spending $30 or more on starter pots, try some of these to save a little money.  Gardening should not be expensive, and it doesn’t have to be if you improvise.

  • Don’t Be Without These Homemade Cough Drops

Don’t Be Without These Homemade Cough Drops

I never tire of homemade cold remedies. I got a pretty bad cold this week and really wished I had made some of these delicious homemade cough drops. A nasty cold is particularly awful to have during cold winter months.

I will definitely be making more of these to have on hand the next time a cold hits. It’s simple, easy, and way better than your average chemical-filled cough drops. Regular store-bought cough drops often have artificial colorings and flavorings in them. They might be able to soothe your cough but they sure won’t help prevent cancer!

Try this simple and wholesome recipe instead. Let’s get started.

    Ingredients:

    4 TBS coconut oil

    1/2 cup honey

    1 tsp ground ginger

    3/4 cup sugar

    1/2 tsp mint extract

    Directions:

    1. Prepare a loaf pan lined with parchment paper, lightly greased with coconut oil
    2. Over low heat, melt all the ingredients together in a saucepan
    3. Stirring constantly, slowly bring the mixture to a boil, at about 250 degrees. (This is called the “hardball” stage in candy making, the point at which the mixture will harden once it has cooled
    4. Carefully pour the mixture into the parchment-lined loaf pan and let cool until you can safely handle it, about 10 minutes. You won’t want to wait much longer
    5. Cut the hardened mixture up into whatever size pieces you like
    6. Individually wrap each piece in wax paper, aluminum foil or lightly dust with cornstarch to prevent sticking
    7. Store in an airtight container at room temperature. These will keep for about a year.

Hope this is helpful for you this cold season! Would also make great gifts for any illness-prone relatives. Enjoy!

  • How to Make Moonshine (Humorous Infographic)

How to Make Moonshine (Humorous Infographic)

I saw this infographic on Pinterest recently and couldn’t resist sharing here! Moonshine is such a humorous cultural icon of the South and of “country living”. I wouldn’t actually recommend making moonshine, and you’ll see the infographic has a warning, since it’s most likely illegal to do so where you live and can be quite dangerous.

*But purely for entertainment purposes*, as a DIY, fermenting, make-everything-at-home enthusiast, I still think it’s super cool and fascinating to see a breakdown of how moonshine is made. I feel like it’s a big part of our cultural history as a nation in a way.

    Enjoy!
